Is black mold in closet urgent for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It seems to have gotten a bit bigger over the last couple of weeks since the humidity spiked. My main concern is my toddler who sleeps in the next room – how urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can tackle myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

Yes, this is a situation that requires prompt attention, especially with a toddler in the home. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, that patch of black mold is a visible sign of a moisture problem, and its recent growth indicates active colonization.

While the term "black mold" (often Stachybotrys chartarum) is concerning due to its potential production of mycotoxins, any mold growth in an occupied space should be treated seriously. For a toddler, whose respiratory and immune systems are still developing, exposure can lead to or exacerbate issues like coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and skin or eye irritation.

The urgency is high because the mold is actively growing. An interior wall closet suggests the moisture source could be a hidden plumbing leak, condensation from an AC unit, or capillary rising damp from the slab – issues a DIY approach cannot diagnose or solve. Simply wiping it with a supermarket cleaner is a temporary fix that addresses the symptom, not the cause. Disturbing it improperly can also aerosolize spores, spreading them to other areas of the home, including your toddler's room.

Our standard protocol in Dubai, aligned with best practices like the IICRC S520, mandates a professional inspection first. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact water source behind that wall. Only then can a proper remediation plan be executed, which includes containment to prevent cross-contamination, safe removal, and addressing the root moisture issue to prevent recurrence.

Given the potential health risks to your child and the high probability of a hidden moisture problem, I strongly recommend a professional assessment immediately. Please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
