Black mold in AC vent making son sick, clean myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our Jumeirah apartment seems to be making my son's asthma way worse, especially at night. I finally pulled the vent cover off and found a ton of black dust and what looks like mold around the edges. It’s been like this since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I absolutely need to call a professional HVAC cleaner?

Based on your description, that's a classic and unfortunately very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the recent high humidity. That black dust is almost certainly a significant mold colony, and it's blowing spores directly into your son's breathing space, which is a major asthma trigger.
First, do not use bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are a severe respiratory irritant, and it can actually feed some types of mold by breaking down into water. For a quick, temporary measure, you can carefully vacuum the visible dust with a HEPA-filtered vacuum and wipe the vent cover with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated, non-bleach mold cleaner. However, this only addresses the visible tip of the iceberg. The real problem is inside the AC ductwork and the evaporator coil, which you cannot access or properly clean yourself. This requires professional HVAC hygienization. In the UAE, companies like ours follow strict NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) standards and use specialized equipment like rotary brushes and negative air machines to contain and remove the contamination. Given your son's health is already being affected, a professional inspection and remediation is strongly advised. We can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold types and spore counts, which is crucial for effective treatment and provides a baseline for post-remediation verification. For a proper assessment and to stop those asthma triggers, please call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We service Jumeirah regularly and can schedule a detailed inspection. In the meantime, try to keep the AC off in that room and use a portable HEPA air purifier if you have one. |
