Should I remove black mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind the wardrobe in my Jumeirah villa bedroom has a big patch of black mold, and it's been slowly growing since that humid spell we had in December. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker. I'm worried it's affecting our sleep as we've been waking up stuffy. Should I try a stronger cleaner myself, or is this a job for a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of long-term, persistent mold growth, likely exacerbated by the high humidity we experienced in December. The fact that it returned darker after a DIY vinegar treatment is a major red flag. Vinegar is a surface-level treatment and does not address the underlying moisture source or the hyphal roots (mycelium) that penetrate porous materials like gypsum board (drywall).

In the UAE, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, the high ambient humidity creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive behind furniture where air circulation is poor. This is a serious case for a few reasons: the size of the patch ("big"), its persistence, and the fact that you're experiencing health symptoms like nighttime stuffiness, which are directly linked to prolonged spore exposure.

Attempting a stronger cleaner yourself, like bleach, is strongly discouraged. It can release a massive cloud of harmful spores into the air as you agitate it, worsening your indoor air quality and potentially causing a more significant health reaction. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has guidelines for environmental health and indoor air quality that professionals are trained to follow, ensuring containment and proper disposal to prevent cross-contamination.

This is absolutely a job for a certified professional. We would need to conduct a thorough inspection to identify the exact species (e.g., Stachybotrys, or "black mold") and, more critically, locate the moisture source—which could be a small plumbing leak, condensation from AC ducts, or capillary action from the wall itself. Remediation involves setting up containment barriers, using HEPA filtration devices, and safely removing and disposing of the affected building materials.

For your health and the integrity of your villa, please do not attempt to handle this yourself. Call us for a professional assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can provide a detailed plan to solve the problem permanently.
