Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been feeling more humid in that room lately. What's the most effective way to handle this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

This is a very common question we get here in Dubai, especially in areas like Al Barsha where high humidity and certain construction methods can create hidden problems. Seeing that black patch on an exterior wall is a significant red flag.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot/0.1 sqm), a DIY approach might be possible. You can clean it with a solution of detergent and water, but never use bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, your situation suggests a deeper issue. The location on an exterior wall and the feeling of humidity strongly indicate a hidden moisture source, likely a small leak in the building envelope or internal condensation due to the temperature differential in our climate. You might clean the visible mold, but the hidden mold growing inside the wall cavity will return quickly and more severely.

Under the UAE's strict health and safety regulations, especially for villas, identifying and rectifying the moisture source is mandatory for effective remediation. This often requires professional-grade thermal imaging and moisture meters. Disturbing mold improperly can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination throughout your HVAC system and entire home, creating a much larger and more hazardous situation.

Given the location and symptoms, I strongly recommend you call a professional company immediately for an inspection. We can identify the exact moisture source, contain the area, and safely remove the contamination in accordance with IICRC standards.
