How to remove mold from a flooded carpet safely?« Back to Previous Page

The carpet in our villa's living room in Al Quoz got soaked during the flood last week and even though it's dried out, there's a really strong damp smell that won't go away. My youngest son has been sneezing non-stop and his eyes are red and itchy whenever he plays there. I'm really worried the mold is making him sick. What's the best way to clean or treat the carpet to kill the mold and make it safe for the kids again?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Al Quoz villa, the damp smell and your son's allergic symptoms are strong indicators of active microbial growth, including mold and bacteria, within the carpet and almost certainly the underlying padding. Simply drying the surface is never sufficient after floodwater saturation, especially here in the UAE where our high humidity impedes evaporation and creates a perfect breeding ground for spores.

The correct remediation protocol is multi-stage. First, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is absolutely critical to assess the full extent of the water damage hidden within the subfloor and walls. Attempting to clean without this data is ineffective.

For a porous material like carpet, complete removal and disposal is almost always the recommended course of action, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for Category 2 water damage (which floodwater falls into). The backing and padding are impossible to fully disinfect. The concrete subfloor must then be mechanically scrubbed with an antimicrobial agent, dried using industrial air movers and dehumidifiers calibrated for our climate, and then tested to verify it's dry and safe before any new flooring is installed.

Given the health symptoms present, I strongly advise against any DIY cleaning attempts. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize spores throughout your home, exacerbating the health risk. This requires professional intervention with the correct PPE and engineering controls.
