Black mold in Jumeirah AC: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months now, and I just spotted some fuzzy black spots behind the wall unit in the main bedroom. We keep the temperature low but the humidity is a constant battle. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray or do I absolutely need to call a professional cleaning service to deal with it properly?

Based on your description of a persistent damp, earthy smell and visible fuzzy black spots behind the wall unit, this is a classic case of hidden mold contamination within your AC system, a very common issue here in JVC and across Dubai due to our high humidity levels.
You absolutely should NOT use a bleach spray. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, can damage AC components, and its high water content can actually feed the mold problem. More critically, attempting to clean it yourself will disturb the spores, aerosolizing them and spreading the contamination throughout your apartment, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and potential health risks. The visible spots are just the tip of the iceberg. The main colony is almost certainly hidden within the damp interior of the AC unit, the ducting, and the drain pan. This requires a professional inspection and remediation protocol. We follow strict guidelines, using EPA-registered biocides and HEPA vacuuming to contain and remove the growth, followed by a hygienization treatment of the entire system to prevent rapid regrowth. For a proper assessment and to get this handled safely, you need to call in a certified specialist. We can conduct a thorough inspection with moisture meters and borescopes to see the full extent.
