Is this black mold making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks, and I just found some black spots behind the dresser in their bedroom, which is on the wall facing the building's exterior. It’s been so humid lately that I’m really worried it’s more than just dirt. How can I tell if this is the dangerous kind of mold and what’s the safest way to clean it with my family here?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots are mold, and it is a credible cause for the persistent coughing you're observing in your children. The combination of high UAE humidity and a cooler exterior wall (which can cause condensation) creates the perfect environment for mold growth. The spores released by active colonies are known respiratory irritants, especially for kids.

While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys, which can produce mycotoxins, it is impossible to identify the species or its potential danger just by looking at it. Many types of mold can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues. The only way to confirm the type and concentration is through professional air and surface sampling, analyzed in an accredited lab.

For the safety of your family, do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other store-bought solutions. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your home, potentially worsening the situation. Improper cleaning can also leave microscopic roots (hyphae) intact, allowing it to regrow quickly.

The safest approach is to call a professional. We follow UAE standards for assessment and remediation, which includes containment barriers, negative air pressure machines (to prevent cross-contamination), and HEPA filtration to remove spores from the air. Our certified inspectors can identify the moisture source (like a potential leak in the external wall) to ensure the problem is solved permanently.
