Mold from AC leak causing headaches and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve started getting these terrible headaches and a stuffy nose every morning. I’ve noticed some dark spots in the corner of the wall behind my clothes, and the air just feels thick and damp when I go in there to get dressed. Could this mold be the reason I’m feeling so unwell, and what’s the best way to fix the humidity in there for good?

Based on your description, it's highly probable that the symptoms you're experiencing – the morning headaches and stuffy nose – are directly linked to microbial growth (mold) resulting from the AC condensate leak. The "thick, damp" air feeling confirms elevated humidity levels, which is the primary catalyst for mold proliferation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like a closet.
The dark spots on the wall are a clear visual indicator of a colony. This mold releases microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and spores into the air, which are known irritants and can trigger allergic reactions, sinus congestion, and headaches in sensitive individuals. For a permanent fix, you need a two-pronged approach: 1. Remediation & Source Control: The leak MUST be addressed first. This is a job for a certified HVAC technician to repair the drain line or pan. The existing mold growth needs to be professionally assessed and remediated. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize spores and exacerbate the problem. Per UAE health and safety guidelines, proper containment and removal protocols are essential. 2. Dehumidification: Simply fixing the leak won't instantly dry out the built-up moisture in the walls and air. For a closet space, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier is extremely effective, as they perform well in the typical UAE climate and cooler temperatures of AC spaces. Ensure the closet door is left ajar to allow for air circulation and that the room's main AC is running consistently, as it is your primary dehumidifier. Given the health symptoms and visible growth, I strongly recommend a professional indoor environmental quality inspection to assess the full extent of the contamination.
