Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. I’m worried it’s from a hidden leak. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, you absolutely should not clean this yourself with bleach. The fact that it's on an exterior wall, has appeared over time, and worsened with humidity is a major red flag for a hidden leak within the wall cavity, likely from a breach in the building's waterproofing or a leaking AC condensation line. Bleach is a terrible choice; it's mostly water, which actually feeds the mold roots (hyphae) deep within the drywall or plaster. It will bleach the surface, making it look clean, but the organism will continue to grow unseen, releasing spores and compromising your indoor air quality.

In the UAE, the high humidity acts as a constant fuel source. Disturbing it incorrectly with DIY methods will aerosolize toxic mold spores throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, creating a much larger contamination issue. A professional inspection is non-negotiable here. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source behind the wall without destructive exploration first. Remediation then involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely removing and disposing of the contaminated porous materials (like your drywall).

For a proper assessment and to prevent structural damage and health risks, you need a certified expert. Please call us for a thorough inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Let's identify that leak and solve this correctly.
