Best way to dehumidify a child's bedroom for mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be working overtime, but I’m still finding small patches of black mold on the back of my kids' wardrobes. My youngest has developed a bit of a persistent cough that gets worse at night, and I’m really worried the humidity is the cause. I’ve tried a small dehumidifier in their room, but it doesn't seem to make a dent. What’s the most effective way to properly dehumidify a child’s bedroom here to prevent mold and improve air quality?

Based on the symptoms you're describing, this is a classic presentation of a humidity and mold issue here in Dubai. The AC running constantly but not solving the problem is a huge red flag. It likely means the system is cooling the air but not adequately removing the latent moisture (the actual humidity), which is what mold feeds on.
The small dehumidifier you're using is insufficient for our extreme Gulf climate. For a child's bedroom, you need a dedicated, properly sized desiccant dehumidifier with a capacity of at least 20-25 liters per day. Crucially, you must identify and address the source of the moisture. The wardrobe against an exterior wall is a prime suspect; this is often a thermal bridge where condensation forms unseen. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. Ensure the AC drip line is not blocked and is properly draining outside. Check that the room's door is kept closed to contain the conditioned air. Your child's cough worsening at night is a significant indicator of poor indoor air quality, likely from mold spores. For a problem of this nature, a DIY approach is not advised. UAE regulations, particularly from DM and DHA, emphasize the health risks of indoor mold. A professional inspection is critical. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint condensation cold spots and hygrometers to measure exact humidity levels, then design a targeted remediation and dehumidification plan.
