How to treat and prevent damp black mold behind sofa?« Back to Previous Page
|
The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started developing these black spots, and it feels slightly damp to the touch. We’ve lived in this Mirdif villa for two years and never had this issue until after the heavy rains in March. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the furniture. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back, and when should I call in a professional?

Good question. This is a very common issue we see in villas across Mirdif and Dubai, especially after the unusual heavy rainfall we experienced. Those black spots are almost certainly mold, and the dampness indicates an ongoing moisture issue that must be addressed.
First, safety: Do not attempt to clean this yourself without proper PPE. Disturbing the mold will release spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it with a solution of detergent and water. Do NOT use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae), and it can exacerbate moisture problems. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely within 24-48 hours to prevent immediate regrowth. This is critical. However, based on your description, this likely requires professional assessment. The fact that it's behind furniture and the wall feels damp suggests the problem may be more than just surface condensation. It could be a leak in the building envelope or rising damp from the foundation, which are structural issues. Spores will also be spreading behind the sofa and into the room. In the UAE, proper remediation involves identifying and eliminating the source of moisture first—this is non-negotiable. Then, the affected materials must be treated with professional-grade antimicrobial agents, not store-bought cleaners. For porous materials like drywall, removal and replacement is often the only permanent solution to ensure all hidden microbial roots are gone. To stop it from coming back, you must improve ventilation. Move the sofa slightly away from the wall and consider using a dehumidifier, especially during our humid summer months. Given the potential for hidden growth and the health risks associated with certain types of mold, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact source and extent of the problem without guesswork.
