How to quickly stop mould in my seaside closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to feel damp to the touch, and a few of my leather bags have developed a thin layer of white mould over the last couple of weeks. It’s the worst on the interior wall that faces the sea. What’s the most effective way to deal with this quickly to stop it from spreading to my clothes?

Good afternoon from Saniservice. This is a classic issue we see in Jumeirah, especially in buildings with direct sea-facing exposure. The damp feel and white mould on your leather goods are clear indicators of a localized humidity problem, likely exacerbated by the saline, humid air and a thermal bridge on that exterior wall.

The most effective immediate action is a three-step process to stabilize the environment. First, remove all affected items from the closet immediately. For the mould on your bags, gently wipe them down with a soft, dry cloth followed by a slightly damp cloth with a mild soap (test on an inconspicuous area first). Do not put them back until the issue is resolved.

Second, you need to drastically reduce the moisture content right now. Empty the closet completely. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water; this will kill surface mould spores without the harsh fumes of bleach. Then, place a powerful desiccant inside the empty closet – we recommend a renewable electric dehumidifier unit if you have one, or several disposable moisture absorber pods (available at Ace Hardware or similar) as a temporary measure.

Third, and most critically, identify the source. The "damp to the touch" interior wall suggests a significant temperature difference is causing condensation. Ensure the AC is running consistently, even when you're out, to keep the apartment's relative humidity below 55%. Check that the AC vent in that room is not blocked and is blowing air towards the closet door.

For a permanent solution, this requires a professional assessment. The wall may need thermal imaging to identify the cold spot and potential insulation flaws. In Dubai, these matters fall under the Dubai Municipality's Public Health & Safety regulations, and persistent dampness can lead to air quality issues.

We strongly recommend a certified inspection to prevent recurrence and protect your property. Our team can conduct a comprehensive humidity mapping and provide a remediation report.
