AC causing mould and dampness: dehumidifier or professional fix?« Back to Previous Page
|
The master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really clammy for the past month, and we're starting to see small patches of black mould in the corner of the wardrobe. The AC runs constantly but the air just feels heavy and damp, especially at night. Is this something I can fix with a store-bought dehumidifier, or do I need to call a professional AC company for a proper assessment?

Good question, and you've described a very common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in older or poorly sealed properties in coastal areas like Jumeirah.
The constant AC operation is a major red flag. While ACs do dehumidify as a byproduct of cooling, a unit that runs non-stop likely isn't sized correctly for the space, has a failing compressor, or has a significant ductwork leakage issue. This means it's cooling but not effectively removing moisture, leading to that heavy, damp feeling and the perfect breeding ground for mould (like the black patches you see, likely Stachybotrys). A store-bought dehumidifier is a temporary mitigation tool, not a fix. It will remove some moisture from the air but it addresses the symptom, not the root cause. The underlying problem is almost certainly your HVAC system's inability to manage the latent load (humidity). This requires a professional assessment. In the UAE, per DM and DEWA regulations, HVAC systems must meet specific performance standards. A certified technician will check for critical issues like refrigerant charge levels, evaporator coil temperature, airflow (CFM), and duct integrity. Duct leaks pulling in humid attic air is a frequent culprit. My strong recommendation is to call for a professional inspection. The mould already present will also need proper remediation to prevent spore dissemination. For a comprehensive assessment of both the AC performance and the mould growth, I'd advise contacting our team. Call 800-MOLDS or 800-66537 or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a diagnostic visit. We can identify why the system is failing and provide a solution to get your bedroom environment back to a healthy, comfortable state. |
