Black mold in apartment: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My apartment in Jumeirah has a weird black speckled patch behind the bedroom wardrobe that I only noticed when I moved it to clean. It's been crazy humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on the symptoms you've described – black speckled patches, high humidity, and recurrence after a DIY vinegar treatment – you are almost certainly dealing with an active mold colony. In the UAE's climate, especially during the humid summer months, this is a very common issue, particularly in areas with poor ventilation like behind furniture.

While the urge to handle it yourself is understandable, I strongly advise against further DIY attempts. Here's why: wiping the surface with vinegar or bleach only addresses the visible growth, not the root cause. The mold's hyphae (root system) penetrate deep into porous materials like drywall and plaster. The humidity you mentioned provides the perfect condition for it to regrow, often more aggressively. Furthermore, disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment and potentially causing health issues.

For a proper resolution, the source of moisture must be identified and controlled, and the affected material must be professionally assessed. In severe cases, removal and replacement of building materials is necessary. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for environmental health and mold remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively.

Given the recurrence, a professional inspection is crucial. We can identify the exact species, the extent of the infestation, and create a targeted remediation plan.
