Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call professional immediately?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has these black speckles that I only noticed when I moved it to find my cat. It’s been crazy humid the last few weeks and the AC in that room hasn't been keeping up. How urgent is it that I deal with this myself, or should I just call a professional immediately?

Based on your description, what you're seeing is very likely active mold growth, a common issue here in the UAE due to the extreme humidity, especially when an AC unit isn't performing optimally. The fact that it was hidden behind a large piece of furniture that traps air and reduces circulation is a classic scenario.

Dealing with this yourself is not advisable and here’s why. First, you need to identify the type of mold. While many are allergenic, some like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") can be toxigenic and require specialized containment procedures for safe removal, as per Dubai Municipality guidelines for environmental health and safety. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, making the problem much worse.

The underlying cause is also critical. A professional inspection, like what we provide, uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the moisture – it could be a small plumbing leak in the wall, condensation from the AC drain line, or simply the humidity itself. Just wiping the surface won't fix that, and the mold will return quickly.

Given the potential health risks to you and your pet, and the high probability of an underlying moisture issue, I strongly recommend calling a professional immediately for an assessment. We can determine the species, the extent, and the source to properly remediate it.
