Can I safely clean mold from my AC unit myself?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom’s AC unit has been leaking a bit of water onto the floor for the last couple of weeks, but now there's a really strong, damp smell every time it kicks on. I just pulled off the cover and the inside is covered in black and green fuzzy patches. What's the most effective way to clean the mold out of my chiller unit myself, or is this a job where I absolutely need to call a professional?

That’s a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the high humidity. What you’re describing—black and green fuzzy patches inside the unit—is a significant microbial growth, and the damp smell confirms active mold spores are being circulated.

For a small amount of surface dust, a DIY clean with a soft brush and a vinegar solution can sometimes suffice. However, your situation sounds advanced. The fact that the unit has been leaking and the growth is extensive means the problem is likely deep within the drip pan, cooling coils, and inaccessible ductwork. Attempting to clean this yourself with household cleaners is ineffective and hazardous. You’ll likely agitate the spores, causing a much wider contamination in your bedroom and HVAC system, and you’re not addressing the root cause: the moisture from the leak.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, extensive mold contamination within HVAC systems requires professional assessment and remediation. Our certified technicians use specialized HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial coatings, and industrial-grade equipment to safely eradicate the growth at its source. More importantly, we will identify and fix the underlying moisture issue to prevent immediate recurrence.

Given the description, I strongly recommend you stop using the unit and call for a professional inspection. We can provide a definitive assessment and a safe, guaranteed solution.
