How to clean and stop wardrobe mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a little, and now I've spotted these small black patches in the corner of the wardrobe on the same wall. It's been crazy humid lately and I'm worried it's the start of a bigger problem we had in our old place. What's the most effective way to clean this and stop it from spreading before it gets worse?

Good question, and you've correctly identified a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the recent high humidity levels in Jumeirah Park. That black patch is almost certainly mold, and the AC leak is the primary moisture source that needs to be addressed immediately.

First, for a small, contained area, you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of distilled white vinegar is highly effective at killing most common household molds. Do NOT use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can actually aggravate the spores. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then wipe clean and allow the area to dry completely. This is a temporary measure.

However, the critical part is stopping it. You must get that AC leak fixed by a certified HVAC technician. The constant moisture from the leak, combined with the humidity, will guarantee the mold returns and spreads into the wall cavity, which is a much larger and more expensive problem. The UAE's high ambient humidity means any hidden moisture leads to rapid microbial growth.

Given your history with a previous mold issue, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to detect hidden dampness within the wall that you cannot see. This is crucial to prevent a full-blown infestation and ensure your indoor air quality is not compromised. DIY cleaning often misses the root cause.
