Can I fix recurring shower mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. The AC vent is right there and it always feels more humid in that spot. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray but it came back after a couple of weeks. Is this something I can fix myself with a better cleaning method, or should I call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description of a recurring black mold patch near the AC vent in your Discovery Gardens bathroom, I would strongly recommend a professional inspection. The combination of high humidity from the shower and the condensation from the AC duct creates a perfect storm for persistent mold growth, often Stachybotrys (the "black mold" you mentioned).

While DIY bleach sprays can remove surface discoloration, they are often ineffective in the UAE's climate. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots growing deep into the porous ceiling material (gypsum board/plaster) behind the paint. This is why it consistently returns.

For a proper remediation, the source of moisture must be addressed. This often involves inspecting the AC system for condensation drain line issues or inadequate insulation around the vent, which is a very common problem here. A pro will use industrial-grade HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial agents specifically designed for porous surfaces, and sealants to prevent regrowth. They will also identify if the mold has spread into the ceiling cavity, which is a serious health risk.

Given the potential for unseen spread and the specific ventilation challenges in Dubai apartments, a professional assessment is the safest approach. We can conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to give you a complete picture and a permanent solution.
