Musty closet smell in Mirdif villa: source and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to smell really musty over the past couple of weeks. I was getting out our winter blankets and realized the smell is strongest in the back corner, and I’m worried the recent humidity might have caused some mold to grow behind the walls or under the carpet. What’s the best way to find the exact source and who should I call in Dubai to properly fix this?

Good afternoon. That is a classic and very concerning issue we see frequently in Mirdif villas, especially after periods of high humidity. A persistent musty odor is almost always a sign of microbial growth, and your intuition about the source is likely correct.

The first step is a thorough visual inspection. Pull everything out of the closet. Check the walls, baseboards, and especially that back corner for any visible discoloration, water staining, or fuzzy growth. Feel the carpet for dampness. In our climate, the source is often condensation from an uninsulated AC duct running in the void space behind the wall or a small, hidden plumbing leak. However, the problem can also be under the carpet if a spill went unnoticed or from a high water table.

Do NOT attempt to handle this yourself with bleach or store-bought sprays. These only mask the smell temporarily and can exacerbate the issue by adding moisture. Disturbing mold without proper containment can spread spores throughout your bedroom.

For an accurate diagnosis and permanent solution, you need a professional indoor environmental quality inspection. A certified company will use tools like thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture and borescopes to look inside walls. They will also conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold type, which is crucial for the remediation plan.

The remediation process must follow strict guidelines like the NADCA ACR standard to ensure it's removed safely and completely. For a proper inspection and quote to resolve this at its source, you should call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We service Mirdif regularly and can identify and fix the root cause.
