How to remove and prevent black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa. It's the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity we've had this summer, it's gotten worse. I’m worried it will spread to our clothes. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Good day. This is a very common issue we see in villas across Mirdif, especially after a humid summer. A patch on an exterior wall points directly to a condensation problem, which is the primary driver of mold growth in the UAE climate.

First, do not simply wipe it with bleach. This will only temporarily remove the visible discoloration but will not address the root cause or the underlying hyphae (root structure) of the mold. For a small patch, a more effective DIY cleaning solution is a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid spore inhalation and contact.

However, the cleaning is only 10% of the solution. The critical step is prevention. That wall is likely cold from AC and meeting the humid outdoor air, causing condensation. You must improve air circulation in that closet immediately. Leave the closet doors open regularly, and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a ventilating fan inside it. Ensure your villa's AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as high indoor humidity is a key contributor.

For a recurring or larger-than-one-square-foot patch, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact temperature differential and moisture meters to check for hidden dampness within the wall cavity that you cannot see. This ensures the remediation is permanent.

If the problem persists or you discover more mold, please call us for a comprehensive assessment. We are certified under Dubai Municipality guidelines for safe and effective mold remediation.
