Could AC mold be causing my toddler's persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My toddler has had a runny nose and a nagging cough for over a week now, and it seems to get worse at night in his bedroom. I’ve been running the AC constantly because of the heat, but I’m starting to wonder if the air quality or maybe mold in the vent is making it persist instead of just a common cold. Is this something I can tackle by cleaning the filters and using a humidifier, or should I take him to get checked out at Mediclinic?

Good question. This is a very common concern here in Dubai, especially with our reliance on AC systems. A toddler's respiratory system is sensitive, and a persistent cough and runny nose that worsen in a specific room are strong indicators of an indoor air quality (IAQ) issue.

While a common cold is possible, the pattern you describe suggests environmental triggers. Constantly running the AC can circulate a high concentration of allergens if the system is contaminated. The two primary culprits are microbial growth (mold/bacteria) within the ductwork or on the cooling coils, and excessively low humidity from the AC dehumidification process, which dries out and irritates mucous membranes.

Simply cleaning the filter is a good first step for maintenance, but it is rarely sufficient to address a mold problem inside the unit or ducts. A humidifier might help with dryness, but if mold is present, adding moisture could inadvertently promote further growth.

For a definitive answer, a professional indoor environmental quality inspection is crucial. We would use tools like a borescope to inspect the interior of your ducts and an air quality monitor to check for elevated spore counts and humidity levels. UAE standards, like the Dubai Municipality guidelines, have specific thresholds for airborne contaminants.

My strong recommendation is to have your son seen by a pediatrician at Mediclinic first to rule out any medical issues. Concurrently, I would advise a professional AC and duct inspection. If you'd like to schedule an assessment to identify or rule out an environmental cause, please don't hesitate to call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
