How to treat mold in JVC apartment and need a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling way more humid than usual since the summer really kicked in. I’ve started noticing a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. I’m really worried it’s the start of a mold problem and I want to stop it before it gets worse or affects our health. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself and should I invest in a dehumidifier for the room?

Good afternoon. Thank you for reaching out with your concern. What you're describing in your JVC apartment is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially during the summer months when the high ambient humidity condenses on cooler interior surfaces, like that external wall in your closet.

First, addressing the existing spots: For a very small, isolated area (less than 1 square foot), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a diluted detergent is often effective. Do NOT use bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots, and its high water content can actually feed the mold deeper in the material. However, this is only a surface fix.

The critical step is identifying and addressing the moisture source. The black spots on an external wall are a major red flag. It could be a minor thermal bridge causing condensation, or more seriously, a small leak in the building's external waterproofing. This is a structural issue that DIY cleaning will not solve.

Regarding a dehumidifier: Absolutely, yes. For a bedroom in JVC, investing in a good quality desiccant dehumidifier is one of the best proactive measures you can take. It will help maintain relative humidity below 60%, making the environment inhospitable for mold growth. Run it especially during the high-humidity summer nights with the AC on.

Given the location on an external wall, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture behind the wall. Treating the visible mold without fixing the hidden cause is a temporary solution. If the building envelope is compromised, it's a matter for your building management to rectify under Dubai's strict health and safety regulations for tenants.

For a definitive assessment and to ensure it's handled correctly, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection. It's better to be safe and stop it at the source.
