Is the muggy villa and black mold making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has felt really muggy inside for the past week, especially in the evenings, even though the AC is running constantly. My throat has been feeling scratchy when I wake up and I’ve started noticing small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. Is this mold caused by the humidity, and could it be what’s making me feel unwell?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of high indoor humidity leading to microbial growth, a very common issue in UAE villas, particularly during the more humid seasons. The muggy feeling despite the AC running indicates your system is likely under-sized, not properly balanced, or there is a significant source of moisture it cannot handle.

The black spots in the closet are almost certainly mold (Cladosporium or Stachybotrys are common here). Closets are prime locations because of poor air circulation, and the organic materials inside (leather, cotton) provide a food source. Your scratchy throat and general feeling of unwellness are consistent with exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which are known irritants to the respiratory system.

In Dubai, the regulatory framework for indoor air quality, particularly in private villas, is not as stringent as for public buildings, but that doesn't make the health risks any less real. The first step is to STOP the moisture source. Have your AC system inspected by a qualified HVAC technician to ensure it is dehumidifying properly—many units here are set only to cool, not to remove moisture. Secondly, you MUST address the mold. For a small, contained area, a professional cleaning with EPA-approved biocides can work, but given the symptoms and the fact it's in the bedroom, I strongly recommend a professional assessment.

We use thermal imaging cameras and precise moisture meters to find the exact humidity levels and hidden condensation points that you can't see. Disturbing mold incorrectly can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.
