What are the signs of mold in my AC unit?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from our AC unit in the master bedroom. I cleaned the vents last week and noticed a few black speckles around the edges of the grille that I'm worried could be mold. We keep the AC running almost 24/7, especially during this summer heat. What are the first signs I should look for inside the actual unit to confirm if it's mold before I call a professional?

Based on your description, particularly the black speckles and the persistent coughing, you are right to be concerned. In the UAE's humid climate, AC units are a prime breeding ground for mold if not properly maintained.

The first signs inside the unit are often a musty, damp odor when the AC kicks on—this is a major red flag. Visually, look for black, green, or greyish speckled patterns on the cooling coils, drip pans, and within the ductwork near the unit. These are classic signs of microbial growth. You might also notice excessive water pooling in or around the indoor unit, indicating a clogged condensate drain line, which creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

It's critical to understand that simply cleaning the visible vent grille does not address contamination deep within the system. The spores can be circulated throughout your home every time the fan runs, which explains the respiratory symptoms your family is experiencing.

For a proper diagnosis, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY attempts can disturb the colony and exacerbate the spore spread. We use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep within ducts and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and concentration, which guides the remediation protocol.

If you see these signs, please do not run the unit. For a certified assessment, call us at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537, or email hello@saniservice.com. Your family's health isnt worth the risk.
