Can I change my low-flow showerhead for better water pressure?« Back to Previous Page

Our landlord installed these low-flow showerheads in the villa a few months ago to save water, but the water pressure is now so weak that my showers take twice as long. I’m in Al Barsha and my water bill hasn't actually gone down, which defeats the whole purpose. Am I allowed to change it back to a normal one, or is this something I need to ask the property management to handle since it was their upgrade?

This is an excellent and very common question we encounter here in Dubai, especially in areas like Al Barsha with older villa infrastructure. While the landlord's intention for water conservation is commendable and aligns with the UAE's sustainability goals, the execution often leads to these performance issues.

Firstly, regarding your right to change it: your tenancy contract is the ultimate guide. Most standard contracts state that tenants cannot make alterations to the property's fixtures without the landlord's written consent. A showerhead, even if it was an upgrade, is typically considered a fixed fixture. Removing it could be a breach of contract, potentially giving the landlord grounds to deduct from your security deposit for "restoration" costs.

The core issue is likely not just the showerhead itself, but a combination of factors. Low-flow fixtures are designed for a specific pressure range. In many older Dubai villas, existing pipework, potential scale buildup, and the distance from the main supply tank can already result in suboptimal pressure. The new showerhead simply exacerbates this underlying problem. The fact your bill hasn't decreased suggests you're spending more time in the shower to achieve the same rinse, nullifying the water savings.

My professional recommendation is to not change it yourself. Instead, contact your property management company. Frame it as a performance and efficiency issue, not a complaint. Request they inspect the water pressure to the villa and assess if the specific low-flow model installed is appropriate for the existing plumbing infrastructure. They may be able to adjust the booster pump settings or install a different model of water-saving showerhead that provides a more satisfactory jet while still conserving water.

If the management is unresponsive and you suspect broader pressure issues, a professional inspection can identify any blockages or system deficiencies. For expert advice, you can always call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
