Black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid lately and I just pulled back the wardrobe in my kid's bedroom to find a bunch of black spots on the wall behind it. It's been like this for a couple of weeks since the weather got hotter and we've been running the AC non-stop. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, that's a classic scenario we see here in Dubai, especially in villas in areas like Jumeirah. The combination of high ambient humidity and the constant, often inadequate, cooling from AC units creates massive condensation issues, particularly behind furniture and on cold walls.

The black spots you're seeing are almost certainly mold. Using bleach is a common DIY mistake; it only bleaches the surface appearance and does not kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating the wall. It's also highly corrosive and can release harmful fumes, especially in an enclosed space. A dehumidifier is a great preventative tool but will not remediate an active colony.

In the UAE, the Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for building health and indoor air quality. For a situation like this, where the mold is out of sight and has likely been growing for weeks, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We need to determine the moisture source (could be a small leak from the AC drain line, condensation, or even rising damp), the extent of the spread inside the wall cavity, and the species of mold present. Some types, like Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins and pose a significant health risk, especially for children.

My advice: Do not disturb it. Avoid spraying anything on it, as this can aerosolize the spores. Move the wardrobe away to allow air circulation and contain the area if possible.

For a proper assessment and a remediation plan that follows UAE best practices, it's best to call in a certified team. We can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to give you a clear picture.
