Is bedroom mold causing my headaches and how urgent?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Mirdif villa has felt really damp since the heavy rains a few weeks ago, and now I’m seeing small black spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our wardrobe. My husband says it’s nothing to worry about, but I’m starting to get headaches when I’m in there. How urgent is it that we get a professional to look at this mold, and could it already be affecting our health?

Good question. This is a very common issue we see in Dubai and Mirdif villas especially after the recent heavy rains. The damp feeling you describe is a major red flag, indicating elevated humidity levels—the primary catalyst for mold growth.

Regarding your headaches: yes, it is absolutely possible they are being caused by the mold. The black spots are likely Cladosporium or even Stachybotrys (often called "black mold"), both of which produce microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and mycotoxins as part of their metabolic process. For sensitive individuals, inhaling these compounds can trigger inflammatory responses, leading to symptoms like persistent headaches, sinus congestion, fatigue, and respiratory irritation. Your sensitivity is a clear indicator that the environment is already affecting you.

The situation is urgent. Mold will not resolve itself and will continue to colonize the wall cavity, the back of the wardrobe, and potentially the sub-flooring. The recent rain likely compromised the building's envelope, leading to moisture intrusion that needs to be professionally identified and sealed.

In the UAE, we follow strict guidelines based on international standards (like IICRC S520) for remediation. DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective and can aerosolize the spores, making the problem worse. The wardrobe must be moved, the extent of the damage assessed with moisture meters, and the affected materials properly contained and removed.

You need a professional inspection to determine the spore type and the source of the moisture. Please do not sleep in that room until it has been assessed. For a certified inspection and a remediation protocol, call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. This is a health and structural issue that needs immediate attention.
