What are the first visual signs of mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has been so humid since the heavy rains a few weeks back. I’ve started noticing a weird, damp smell in the kids' walk-in closet, and my youngest has developed a persistent cough that gets worse at night. What are the first visual signs of mold I should be looking for in there?

Given the recent heavy rains in Dubai, what you're describing is unfortunately very common in villas here. The humidity spike creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. For a visual inspection in that walk-in closet, here's what I'd look for as a certified mold inspector:

First, check for any visible discoloration on walls, ceilings, and especially the back of the closet. Mold often appears as fuzzy or slimy patches that can be black, green, grey, white, or even orange. Pay close attention to corners and where the wall meets the ceiling, as these areas have poor airflow. Don't forget to inspect hidden surfaces – pull everything out and look behind furniture and boxes. Check the baseboards and the underside of any shelving; condensation often forms there. Another key sign is warping or cracking of plaster or wood, as the moisture causing the mold can also damage the building materials.

The damp smell and your child's worsening cough at night are strong indicators that mold is likely present, even if it's not yet massively visible. Spores in the air can significantly aggravate respiratory issues. In the UAE, the climate makes this a serious health and property integrity concern.

For a case like this, with health symptoms involved, a DIY approach isn't advisable. You need a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the moisture and the full extent of the growth, which is often hidden inside walls. We can provide a comprehensive assessment and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
