How to permanently stop black mold in humid bathroom shower?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots over the last few months. We're in a villa in Jumeirah, and even though we run the exhaust fan, the humidity just seems to linger forever after everyone's morning showers. I've scrubbed it with bleach, but it keeps coming back within a couple of weeks.
What's the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from recurring in our humid climate, aside from just cleaning it repeatedly?

Based on your description, that's classic black mold (likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus niger) and it's a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Jumeirah with high ambient humidity. Bleach only bleaches the surface pigment and doesn't address the root cause: the mold's hyphae (roots) penetrate deep into the porous grout, which remains damp.
The long-term solution requires a multi-pronged approach: 1. Moisture Control is CRITICAL: Your exhaust fan is likely undersized or not run long enough. For our climate, you need a high-CFM fan that runs for at least 60 minutes post-shower. Consider installing a humidistat switch that automatically turns it on/off based on humidity levels. Also, after showering, use a squeegee on the walls and leave the shower door open to allow air circulation. 2. Grout and Sealant Integrity: Old, cracked, or poorly sealed grout is a sponge. The permanent fix is to have the old grout professionally removed and replaced with a high-quality, mold-inhibiting epoxy grout, which is non-porous. The silicone sealant around the base and corners must also be stripped and replaced with a premium 100% silicone sealant. 3. Professional Remediation: Surface cleaning is a temporary fix. For a recurring problem, the mold needs to be professionally remediated. This involves applying specialized antimicrobial agents that penetrate and neutralize the mold colonies at their root, not just on the surface. This creates a barrier that prevents regrowth. Given the persistent nature, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can conduct a moisture meter reading to identify any hidden dampness within the walls and perform air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration. This data is crucial for implementing the correct, permanent solution. For a proper assessment and a lasting fix, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
