Is black mold in my Dubai home dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Mirdif. It must have been growing there for ages, hidden from view, and I’m really worried it's toxic. What's the safest way to clean this ourselves, or should I immediately call a professional company here in Dubai?

Based on your description of the situation in Mirdif, this is a serious concern that warrants immediate and careful attention. The presence of persistent coughing in children combined with visible black mold growth, especially hidden behind furniture where it has likely been proliferating for an extended period, strongly indicates an indoor air quality issue that can affect health.
In the UAE's climate, the combination of high humidity and air conditioning units can create ideal conditions for mold, particularly in less-ventilated areas like behind wardrobes. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum), any significant mold growth can produce allergens and irritants that are particularly problematic for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems. The coughing is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores. For your safety, I strongly recommend against attempting a large-scale cleanup yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing airborne contamination throughout your home and potentially worsening your kids' symptoms. DIY methods with bleach or vinegar are often ineffective on porous surfaces and can be hazardous. The safest course of action is to call a professional. We are regulated by Dubai Municipality guidelines which require proper assessment, containment, and removal procedures to ensure the mold is eradicated safely and the root cause (like a moisture issue) is identified and fixed. Our certified inspectors can test the mold to determine the species and the spore count in your air, which is crucial information for remediation. Please, for the health of your family, do not disturb the area. Call us immediately for a professional inspection and quote at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We serve Mirdif and can schedule a visit promptly to assess the situation and recommend the safest remediation plan. |
