How to treat black mould in a humid AC bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really humid for the past couple of weeks, and I just discovered a small patch of black mould behind the wardrobe. With summer coming and the AC running constantly, I’m worried it will spread quickly and affect my family’s health. What are the immediate steps I should take to deal with this properly?

Good morning. This is a very common issue we see in Dubai villas, especially in areas like Jumeirah with high humidity levels. That black patch is a symptom of a larger moisture problem, and treating it properly requires a systematic approach to prevent recurrence and protect your family's health.

Immediately, move the wardrobe away from the wall to ventilate the area. Do not attempt to dry scrub or vacuum the mould, as this will aerosolize the spores. For a small patch (less than 1 sq. ft.), you can carefully clean it wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary mould remover, scrubbing gently. However, the critical step is identifying and eliminating the moisture source. In an AC room, this is often due to low thermostat settings causing the AC to short-cycle and not dehumidify properly, or a leaking AC drain line inside the wall. Set your AC to 22-24°C to ensure it runs long enough to remove moisture.

Given the hidden nature of AC ducts and drains, and UAE's strict health and safety regulations for villas, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact condensation point and assess spore spread in the air. Remediation often involves AC system cleaning, duct sanitization, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial coatings.
