Black mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park. It's on the wall that faces the outside and it’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. My husband thinks we can just wipe it down with bleach, but I'm worried it's a bigger issue. Should we call a professional company for an inspection or is this a DIY job?

Based on your description, this is a textbook case for a professional inspection. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, especially after recent spikes, that black spotting in an exterior-facing closet wall is a major red flag.

The location suggests a potential thermal bridging issue, where the wall's temperature difference causes condensation inside the cavity, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. Simply wiping the surface with bleach is a temporary and ineffective fix. Bleach does not address the root moisture problem, its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces, and it can actually aggravate certain mold types by releasing more spores and mycotoxins into the air. The visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg," with a much larger colony likely thriving inside the wall.

Under the Dubai Municipality health and safety regulations, persistent mold growth is considered an indoor environmental hazard that requires proper assessment and remediation to protect occupant health and building integrity. A DIY approach risks inadequate containment, leading to cross-contamination throughout your home.

Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion behind the wall. We then take air and surface samples to identify the specific mold species, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. This is not a scare tactic; it's essential for ensuring the problem is solved permanently and your family's health is protected.

For a thorough assessment and a definitive solution, I strongly recommend calling our team. We can provide a clear diagnosis and a plan to fix it for good.
