How to fix AC whistling noise at night?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has started making a high-pitched whistling noise every night around 2 AM when it cycles on, which is driving us crazy. It's a relatively new unit, only about a year old, and the filters are clean. What could be causing this annoying whistle specifically at night and how can I fix it myself before I have to call a technician?

Good question, this is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially with the extreme cooling loads our ACs handle. A high-pitched whistle at night, even on a new unit with clean filters, points strongly to two primary culprits, both related to the specific conditions at 2 AM.

First, and most likely, is a refrigerant leak or incorrect charge. At night, ambient temperatures drop significantly, which changes the pressure dynamics within the AC system. A small leak or an undercharged system that's manageable during the day's heat can cause refrigerant to hiss or whistle through the expansion valve or a tiny orifice as it struggles at the lower nighttime pressure. This is a job for a certified F-gas technician. DIY repair is illegal under UAE regulations for handling refrigerants and is extremely dangerous.

Second, check the external supply grilles and vents in your bedroom. A slightly warped plastic louver or a buildup of fine Jumeirah Park dust in a specific spot can act like a reed in a wind instrument, creating that whistle only when the fan speed is at a certain RPM, which often occurs during the lower-demand nighttime cycle. Inspect the vents for any obstructions or damage and wipe them down thoroughly.

Given that the noise is internal and linked to the cooling cycle, I strongly suspect the refrigerant issue. Continuing to run it can damage the compressor, leading to a much costlier repair. Our technicians are equipped with ultrasonic leak detectors and manometers to precisely diagnose and resolve this pressure-related fault in line with Dubai Municipality standards.

For a definitive diagnosis, please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We can usually get to Jumeirah Park within 24 hours.
