Is my AC mold making me sick in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been blowing a faint, damp smell for a couple of months now, and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I finally took off the cover and the inside of the unit is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. I live in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm really worried this is making me sick. How quickly do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and should I see a doctor about these symptoms?

Based on your description, it is highly likely that the mold growth inside your AC unit is the direct cause of your respiratory symptoms—the stuffy nose and sore throat are classic indicators of mold exposure, especially from a system that's blowing air directly into your sleeping environment.

The hot and humid climate in Dubai, particularly in older buildings in areas like Bur Dubai where AC systems run continuously, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold inside the evaporator coils and drip pans. The black and green fuzzy growth you observed is a significant contamination issue.

You absolutely need to address this promptly. I would recommend getting a professional inspection and remediation done within the next week. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with store-bought sprays, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the indoor air quality, potentially making you even sicker. A professional company will use containment procedures, HEPA vacuums, and EPA-approved biocides to safely eradicate the growth and treat the system to prevent rapid regrowth.

Regarding your health, it is advisable to consult a doctor and inform them of your suspected mold exposure. They can properly assess your symptoms.
