Black mold behind sofa: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the MBR villa has started to feel damp and there's a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate. We had a small leak from the upstairs bathroom a couple of weeks ago that we thought was fixed, but this just showed up. I'm worried about my family's health and the wall rotting. Should I just try to clean this myself with bleach, or is this big enough that I need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and roughly what would that cost here in Dubai?

Based on the description, you absolutely need to call a professional. A dinner-plate-sized patch of black mold stemming from a previous leak is a serious issue, not a DIY project.

Here's why: Using bleach is a common mistake. It only bleaches the surface pigment and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) deep within the gypsum board and structure. The dampness you feel confirms an ongoing moisture issue—either the leak wasn't fully resolved or there's residual saturation. In Dubai's climate, this will only worsen rapidly, leading to structural rot and a major health hazard, especially with black mold which can cause severe respiratory issues.

We follow strict UAE civil defense and environmental guidelines for a reason. Proper remediation involves:
1. Containment: Sealing the area to prevent spores from spreading throughout your AC system and home.
2. Removal: The affected drywall likely needs to be cut out and disposed of properly.
3. HEPA Vacuuming & Antimicrobial Treatment: To eradicate all spores and prevent regrowth.
4. Drying: Using industrial dehumidifiers to ensure the cavity is bone-dry before reconstruction.

For a patch that size, including inspection, remediation, and drying, costs in Dubai can range from AED 2,000 to AED 4,500, depending on the extent of the damage behind the wall.
