Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom where it's always a bit damp. I found a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the wall. It's been really humid the last couple of months and I think the AC might not be reaching that corner properly. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common situation here in Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels and AC-dependent environments.

Finding a dinner-plate sized patch of black mold behind furniture is a significant discovery. While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution (though we don't typically recommend it as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen spores), your case presents several red flags that strongly indicate the need for a professional assessment.

First, the location—a consistently damp corner where the AC doesn't reach—suggests a potential humidity or condensation issue that cleaning alone won't fix. The mold will almost certainly return if the underlying moisture problem isn't identified and resolved. Second, the correlation with your children's coughing is a major health concern. Certain types of black mold (like Stachybotrys) can produce mycotoxins that cause respiratory issues, particularly in children.

In the UAE, proper remediation involves more than just wiping it away. It requires containment to prevent cross-contamination, specialized biocides to eliminate the mold at its root, and industrial-grade dehumidifiers to properly dry the structure. Attempting a DIY clean could aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout your HVAC system and home, potentially making the problem much worse.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved permanently, I highly recommend a professional inspection. We can identify the exact species and the source of the moisture.
