Is black mold in closet urgent with a newborn?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where the outside wall is. With all the humidity lately, I’m worried it might be mold. We have a newborn, so I'm trying to figure out if this is something I need to deal with immediately or if it can wait a week for our landlord to send someone. Is this a serious health risk that requires emergency remediation, or is it generally considered a minor issue that can be scheduled for a normal appointment?

Good question, and as a professional in Dubai, I can tell you this is a common concern, especially with the high humidity we've been experiencing. For a newborn, any potential mold growth should be treated with a high degree of caution, but not necessarily panic.

Those small black spots in the closet corner are likely mold, given the location on an outside wall which is prone to condensation. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), any mold can produce allergens and irritants that are particularly problematic for infants, whose respiratory systems are still developing. The risk is the potential for respiratory issues or allergic reactions.

In the UAE, the humidity absolutely accelerates mold growth. It is not typically considered an "emergency" requiring 24/7 remediation if the area is very small (less than 1 square meter) and isolated. However, with a newborn in the home, I would strongly recommend against waiting. The priority is to identify the type and source to ensure your family's health.

Your first step is to inform your landlord immediately in writing, as they are responsible for resolving the underlying moisture issue. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself, as this can aggravate the spores.

For a definitive answer and to ensure it's handled safely, a professional inspection is crucial. We use thermal imaging to find the moisture source and air sampling to identify the spore types. This will determine the urgency and scope of remediation needed.

Given your situation, I'd advise scheduling an inspection as soon as possible. You can call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a assessment. We can provide a report for your landlord and recommend the appropriate, safe remediation steps.
