Black shower grout spreading: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has turned black and it's starting to spread to the ceiling. We're in an older villa in Al Barsha and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse, especially after our long showers. I've tried a bleach spray but it came back after a few days. Should I just call a professional cleaning company for a proper treatment, or is this something I can handle myself with a stronger product from ACE Hardware?

Good afternoon from Saniservice. That black discoloration in your shower grout is a classic sign of a mold infestation, and it's an extremely common issue here in Dubai, especially in older villas in areas like Al Barsha where construction and ventilation can sometimes trap humidity.

The fact that it has returned after a bleach treatment is a major red flag. Bleach is a surface-level biocide that often fails to penetrate porous materials like grout and the underlying substrate. It kills the surface mold but leaves the root structure (hyphae) intact, allowing it to regrow quickly. This rapid recurrence, combined with the spread to the ceiling, strongly suggests a more entrenched moisture problem, potentially within the wall cavity itself.

For a case like this, a simple cleaning company or a stronger chemical from ACE is not the right solution. You need a professional environmental inspection. Our certified technicians would perform a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping with thermal imaging to identify the source of the humidity—which could be a tiny leak in the plumbing behind the tile, insufficient waterproofing, or inadequate ventilation. We then take air and surface samples to identify the exact species of mold, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol as per UAE standards.

Attempting a aggressive DIY removal on an established colony can inadvertently aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a health risk.

Given the spread you're describing, I would strongly recommend a professional evaluation. Please give our team a call at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection. We can determine the full extent of the issue and provide a safe, effective, and permanent solution.
