Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in the Marina apartment has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled our king-sized bed away from the wall to find a patch of black mold spreading behind it, probably from all the condensation. It's been there a while and covers an area about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai?

Finding that patch of black mold behind your bed in a humid Marina apartment is a very common issue here in Dubai. The high humidity, especially with AC units creating condensation, is a perfect breeding ground.
For a small, isolated patch (dinner-plate sized), you can attempt a DIY clean. However, I must stress that this is only if the mold is on a non-porous surface like painted drywall or tile. Do NOT use bleach; it's mostly water and can actually feed the mold root structure beneath the surface. A proper antifungal disinfectant or a strong vinegar solution is better. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. But here’s the critical part for the UAE: if that wall is an external partition wall, the mold growth could be a symptom of a much larger hidden problem within the wall cavity, potentially from a leaking AC condensation line or a breach in the building's vapor barrier. This is where DIY fails completely. Given the persistent humidity you've described and the likelihood of hidden moisture, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the true source of the moisture. Without fixing that, the mold will 100% return, even after cleaning. For a proper assessment and to ensure it's handled according to Dubai Municipality guidelines, it's best to call a pro.
