Cost and DIY feasibility for bathroom mold behind toilet?« Back to Previous Page

Our ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally spotted black speckles all along the bottom of the wall behind the toilet. It’s a tight space and I'm worried the mold has spread behind the tiles. What’s the realistic cost range for professional mold remediation for something like this, and is it a complete DIY fail to try and handle it myself with bleach?

Good question. What you're describing, especially in a high-humidity environment like JVC, is a classic case of mold growth due to persistent moisture. Those black speckles are almost certainly mold, and the musty smell is a dead giveaway that it's active. The tight space behind the toilet is a prime location as it gets little to no air circulation.

On cost: For a localized issue like this in a Dubai apartment, a professional remediation would typically range from AED 1,000 to AED 3,500. The final price depends on the extent of the spread behind the tiles, which an inspection camera can determine. If the wall cavity is affected, the cost will be higher as it requires more intensive work. We always provide a firm quote after a proper inspection.

On DIY with bleach: Honestly, it's a temporary fix at best and a complete fail for the root cause. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration on non-porous surfaces but doesn't kill the hyphae (the roots) growing deep into the grout and drywall. It also introduces more moisture, potentially feeding the mold. Crucially, improper handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem to other areas. For anything beyond a tiny surface spot, DIY is not recommended.

Given the smell and visible growth, a professional assessment is crucial to prevent structural damage and potential health issues. We can use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind the walls without unnecessary demolition.
