Can I fix a musty wardrobe myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our walk-in wardrobe in the Marina apartment has had a damp, musty smell ever since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. We’ve tried those dehumidifier boxes and it’s still there, and I’m worried it’s getting into our clothes. Is this something I can fix myself with a good cleaning, or do I definitely need to call in a professional, and roughly how much does that usually cost here?

Based on the conditions you describe in your Marina apartment, this is a very common issue we see here in Dubai, and it's almost certainly a mold issue. The high humidity, especially in coastal areas, provides the perfect environment for mold growth, often hidden behind walls or under flooring.

While a thorough cleaning with a vinegar solution or specialized mold-cleaning product can address surface growth on visible areas of the wardrobe, it's unlikely to solve the root cause. The persistent musty odor indicates a deeper problem, likely within the wall itself or the sub-floor, which those dehumidifier boxes can't reach. This hidden mold will continue to release spores, contaminating your clothes and potentially affecting indoor air quality, which is a concern under UAE's public health and building codes.

For a proper resolution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture intrusion and the extent of the colonization. Remediation typically involves controlled removal of affected materials, application of antimicrobial agents, and addressing the moisture source, which could be a small plumbing leak or condensation within the AC system.

Costs for a wardrobe remediation in Dubai can vary but typically start from AED 1,500 upwards, depending on the severity. Given that your clothes are at risk, I wouldn't delay. For a proper assessment, you should call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
