Should I treat black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for about 5 years, but this past humid season the damp smell in our walk-in closet just won't go away. I finally moved everything out yesterday and found a patch of black fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading from the corner where the wall meets the carpet. Given how quickly the humidity is rising again, is this something I need to get treated professionally like, this week, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution over the weekend?

Based on what you’re describing in your Mirdif villa, I would strongly recommend against treating this yourself with bleach and to call a professional immediately, especially before the humidity climbs further.
That black fuzzy patch behind the carpet is a major red flag. The size (a dinner plate) indicates an established colony, and its location at the wall-carpet junction suggests a potential moisture issue from within the wall cavity, like a slow pipe leak or rising damp from the slab, which bleach will not fix. In our climate, the high humidity acts as a constant fuel source, allowing mold to regrow quickly and spread unseen. Bleach is surface-level only; it can't reach the roots (hyphae) penetrating the drywall and sub-floor, and it can actually aggravate the situation by releasing more spores into the air. Professionally, we follow strict UAE guidelines for assessment and remediation. We start with a full inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species (some are more hazardous than others) and the true extent of the contamination, which is almost always worse than what's visible. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and the safe removal of affected porous materials like that drywall and carpet section. DIY attempts often cross-contaminate the entire HVAC system, turning a localized problem into a whole-house issue. For a problem of this scale and potential hidden severity, you need a certified team. Don't risk your family's health or your property. Call us for an emergency inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can be there this week. |
