Black mold in AC duct causing health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa seems to be spreading a damp, earthy smell throughout the downstairs, and for the last month, my wife and I have been waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats. I just pulled a vent cover off in the living room and the inside of the duct looks like it has black speckles all over it. Is this definitely mold, and what's the proper way to get the entire AC system inspected and cleaned?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of a significant mold contamination issue within your HVAC system. The black speckles you observed are highly indicative of microbial growth, and the persistent health symptoms you and your wife are experiencing are a major red flag.

In the UAE's humid climate, AC ducts are a prime breeding ground for mold. Condensation buildup inside the ducts, often from a slightly undersized unit working overtime or a drainage issue, creates the perfect damp, dark environment for spores to colonize. The musty smell and the fact that the AC is actively distributing these spores throughout your living space directly correlate to your morning sinus and throat irritation.

A proper inspection is not a simple cleaning. It requires a certified professional to conduct a thorough assessment. This includes using borescopes to inspect deep within the ductwork and, critically, taking air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the specific type(s) of mold present. This is essential for determining the correct remediation protocol, as some species are more hazardous than others. DIY cleaning often just agitates the colony, releasing a massive amount of spores and making the problem worse.

For a villa in Jumeirah, you need a comprehensive solution. The entire system—including the evaporator coils, drip pans, plenums, and all ductwork—must be professionally inspected, treated, and hygienized using EPA-approved biocides and HEPA vacuuming to ensure the colony is eradicated at its source.

Given the health symptoms, I strongly recommend you stop using the system and call for a professional assessment immediately. You can reach our certified team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
