Black mold in Dubai apartment: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been feeling way too humid lately and I just found patches of black mold in the back of my bedroom closet where I keep my winter clothes. The AC is always running but it doesn't seem to help the dampness in that one room. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai?

Hey there, that's a very common issue we see here in JVC and across Dubai, especially with our high humidity levels. Finding black mold in a closet is a definite red flag that shouldn't be ignored.

First, I strongly advise against using bleach. It's mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots deep within porous materials like drywall or clothing, and it only bleaches the surface, making the problem worse in the long run. The real issue is the excess moisture. A constantly running AC that isn't dehumidifying properly is a key clue. The unit might need servicing, or the room may have poor ventilation.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), you could carefully clean it yourself with a dedicated antimicrobial cleaner (not bleach), wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the location—a closet with stored fabrics—and the fact it's recurring, this is likely a symptom of a larger problem. Spores will have contaminated your winter clothes, and the moisture source needs to be professionally identified.

Under UAE health and safety guidelines, persistent mold growth in a residential unit is a serious indoor air quality concern that often requires professional assessment. We use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture sources and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels.

My professional recommendation is to get a certified mold inspection. They can pinpoint the exact cause—whether it's a hidden leak, an AC drain pan issue, or insufficient ventilation—and prescribe the correct remediation protocol. For proper testing and guaranteed removal, it's best to call in the pros.
