Best dehumidifier for a large, damp Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa has felt so clammy and damp ever since the weather started to really heat up last month. My youngest has developed a nagging cough that seems much worse at night, and I’ve started to notice a few small patches of mold in the corner of the walk-in closet. What’s the most effective type of dehumidifier for a large bedroom here in Dubai, and is it safe to run it all night with the kids in the room?

Based on your description of the villa in Mirdif, you're experiencing a classic case of high latent load, which is extremely common here in Dubai during the summer. The combination of high outdoor humidity and powerful AC units that cool air quickly but often lack sufficient dehumidification capabilities leads to that clammy feeling and, critically, the mold growth you're seeing.
For a large master bedroom, you need a unit with a high moisture removal rate, measured in liters per day (L/day). I'd recommend a desiccant dehumidifier for our climate. While refrigerant models are common, desiccant types perform more efficiently in the high ambient temperatures typical of a Dubai villa and are better at extracting moisture at the lower temperatures an AC creates. Look for a capacity of at least 20-25 L/day for a sizable room. Regarding safety, yes, it is perfectly safe to run a high-quality, modern dehumidifier in a room with children. They operate similarly to an AC unit. Ensure you select a model with a built-in hygrostat so you can set your target humidity level (ideally between 45-55% RH) and it will switch off automatically, preventing the air from becoming excessively dry. The small patches of mold and the child's cough, however, are significant indicators that this issue has progressed. Mold spores are already airborne. A dehumidifier will manage the symptom (humidity) but will not address the existing microbial contamination. For your family's health, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent of the mold and recommend a proper hygienization protocol.
