Children's persistent cough after sandstorm: clinic or home remedies?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been dealing with a persistent dry cough ever since the sandstorm last week in Al Quoz. Even with all the windows closed, the fine dust seems to have gotten into our apartment and it’s just not clearing up. I’m vacuuming every day but they’re still waking up at night coughing. Should I be taking them to a clinic or is there something specific I can do at home to help clear the air and their lungs?

As a specialist in IEQ here in Dubai, this is a very common concern after a major shamal. The fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) from these storms is incredibly invasive and can linger indoors for weeks, even with windows sealed. This dust is not just sand; it's a complex mixture of silica, pollutants, and potential biological contaminants that is a known respiratory irritant.
For children, whose airways are smaller and more sensitive, this can absolutely trigger a persistent dry cough, especially at night when mucous drainage can exacerbate the irritation. While a clinic visit is always prudent to rule out any secondary infection, the core issue is your indoor air quality. Vacuuming, unfortunately, can temporarily aerosolize the finest particles. Your immediate steps should be: 1. Upgrade your AC filters to a minimum MERV 8 rating, but preferably MERV 13 if your system can handle it. Run the fan continuously for 48 hours to scrub the air. 2. Use a true HEPA air purifier in the children's bedrooms. This is non-negotiable for capturing the ultrafine dust that settles. 3. Wipe all horizontal surfaces with a damp microfiber cloth daily instead of dusting dry. 4. Consider a professional duct cleaning. This is often where the majority of the contaminated dust resides and is continuously recirculated. If symptoms persist beyond a few days of improved air cleaning, I strongly recommend a professional indoor air quality assessment. We can measure particulate levels and identify if mold growth has been triggered by the humidity spike that often follows these storms, which is a whole other health risk.
