Could AC mold cause my morning wheezing and chest tightness?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom of our Mirdif villa has been leaking a little for the past few months, and I’ve started waking up every single morning with a tight chest and wheezing. I’ve noticed some black spots around the vent when I change the filter. Could this mold from the AC be causing my asthma to flare up like this?

Yes, absolutely. What you're describing is a classic presentation of mold-induced asthma exacerbation, and it's a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially in villas in areas like Mirdif. The constant AC operation combined with high humidity creates a perfect breeding ground for mold inside the units.

The black spots you see around the vent are a significant red flag. This is likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), both of which are potent allergens and respiratory irritants. When the AC turns on, it blows these microscopic spores and mycotoxins directly into your bedroom. You're then breathing this contaminated air for 6-8 hours straight while you sleep, which explains why your symptoms—chest tightness and wheezing—are most severe in the morning.

The leaking AC unit is the root cause. The standing water in the drip pan or from the leak provides the moisture mold needs to thrive. Simply changing the filter isn't enough, as the contamination is inside the ductwork and the unit's evaporator coils.

For your health and safety, I strongly recommend you stop using that bedroom AC unit immediately. This is a serious case that requires professional intervention. DIY cleaning can aerosolize the spores and make the problem much worse. Under UAE regulations, proper mold remediation requires specific containment and air scrubbing protocols to prevent cross-contamination.

Our certified inspectors can perform a full assessment, including air and surface sampling to identify the exact species and concentration. This is crucial for designing an effective remediation plan. Please, give us a call so we can help you resolve this and breathe easily again.
