Black mold behind sofa: DIY with vinegar or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray, or do you think I need to call in a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Good question, and unfortunately, a very common issue here in Dubai's climate.

The black spots you're describing are a significant red flag. The constant damp feeling you mention, even with AC, points to a persistent humidity problem, which mold absolutely thrives on. While vinegar can kill some surface-level mildew, it is not a certified or effective solution for a suspected black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) infestation.

In the UAE, the high humidity, especially during summer, combined with potential issues like inadequate wall insulation or even a small, hidden plumbing leak in that interior wall, creates the perfect breeding ground. A DIY approach with vinegar will only bleach the visible surface. It will not address the moisture source or the mycotoxins and spores that have likely penetrated the porous wall material (drywall/plaster).

For a case like yours, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We need to identify the exact species of mold (through air and surface sampling) and, most critically, locate the source of the moisture. Attempting to clean it improperly can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and posing potential health risks.

Our certified technicians use industry-standard protocols for safe containment, removal, and antimicrobial treatment, in line with UAE environmental safety guidelines. This is not a job for a general cleaning company; it requires specific expertise in mold remediation.
