Is black mold from a leaking AC dangerous for children?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking into the wall for a couple of months, and we just pulled back the corner of the carpet to find black spots spreading underneath. My youngest has had a constant runny nose and I'm really worried it's connected. What is the most effective company to call for a proper mold inspection and remediation that won't just do a surface clean?

Yes, black mold growth resulting from a leaking AC unit is absolutely a serious health concern, especially for children. The constant moisture from the leak creates an ideal breeding ground for various molds, including Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as "black mold." This species is known for producing mycotoxins.

Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems and immune systems. The symptoms you're describing—a persistent runny nose—are classic indicators of mold exposure. Other symptoms can include chronic coughing, wheezing, eye irritation, skin rashes, and headaches. Prolonged exposure can exacerbate asthma and lead to more severe respiratory conditions.

In the UAE's climate, where we rely heavily on AC, these leaks are a frequent but often hidden problem. The mold grows behind walls and under carpets, as you've discovered, meaning a simple surface clean is completely ineffective and even dangerous as it can aerosolize the spores. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and remediation to prevent such health hazards.

You need a professional inspection immediately. A certified company will use tools like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and most importantly, air and surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall and carpet padding, and thoroughly treating the area with antimicrobial solutions.

For a proper, health-focused inspection and remediation that addresses the root cause, I strongly recommend you call our team at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. Do not attempt to disturb it yourself.
