Could AC mold in my Dubai apartment be causing sinus issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months. I’ve started getting these awful sinus headaches and a constant stuffy nose that I never had before, and I’ve noticed some black speckles around the vent in the master bedroom. Could this be mold making me sick, and who do I call to get it properly tested in Dubai?

Based on your symptoms and the description of the AC unit leaking, there is a very high probability that microbial growth, specifically mold, is the cause of your sinus headaches and congestion. The black speckles around the vent are a major red flag. AC systems provide the perfect environment for mold: darkness, condensation from the leak, and organic dust for it to feed on. When the unit operates, it aerosolizes these spores directly into your breathing air, leading to the allergic reactions you're experiencing.

In the UAE's humid climate, this is a common issue. For a proper assessment, you absolutely need a professional indoor environmental inspector. DIY test kits are unreliable and won't identify the species or extent of the contamination. A certified professional will conduct a visual inspection, use moisture meters to find the source of the leak, and perform air and surface sampling to identify the specific type of mold, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as disturbing it can cause a massive release of spores. The first step is to get a certified inspection to understand the full scope.
